It is, as in the West, the first of three masses for Easter Sunday. The second is the morning service (I attended one on the millennial celebration of Russian Orthodoxy in 1988!). The third is before sundown. So the same ecumenical problem about sharing at the altar would persist. -- Another point, about the Orthodox sharing in an ecumenical Easter Vigil: though the dates may be the same in a given year, the Orthodox Easter Service has a completely different structure with its own integrity climaxing with the Eucharist. While persons of other denominations could be present strictly as guests, I see no way that shared Baptisms could be integrated into the rite, nor non-Orthodox clergy co-presiding in any part of the service. That service is THE Easter Service for them, they don't come back again in the morning. At least this is to the best of my knowledge -- perhaps more flexibilty is found here and there. Now I know otherwise.

The problem I often encounter is that worship services often do not handle the palm to passion movement very well within the service, especially when they try to hold on to their "typical" order of worship but stuff the palm to passion elements into it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105645668284699378.post-71251504070322477442011-04-20T14:00:58.234-05:002011-04-20T14:00:58.234-05:00Thanks, Mike.
I am unreservedly for Palm/Passion...Thanks, Mike.

I am unreservedly for Palm/Passion Sunday!

I am equally unreservedly for encouraging all to be part of services every day of Holy Week, if at all possible, and all the services of the Triduum (Holy Thursday through Easter Vigil) they can possibly get to.

I believe this week of many services also invites much ecumenical collaboration. Smaller congregations, especially, may not be able to pull off all these services themselves. So what if, for example, you were to agree that the Methodists would host Maundy Thursday (we have a strong tradition of foot washing!), the Roman Catholics Good Friday (since there is no Eucharist at this service, no one need be left out!), the Lutherans or the Orthodox (the calendars coincide this year!) Holy Saturday, and the Episcopalians the Great Vigil, with presiders from each tradition offering baptism according to their own rite. (Roman Catholics and Orthodox do recognize our baptisms-- just not our Eucharists-- so this may have to be a Protestants only service when the Table rolls around).

Peace in Christ,

Taylor Burton-EdwardsTaylor W Burton Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00963804209682220712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105645668284699378.post-17390651787477938452011-04-20T13:47:26.108-05:002011-04-20T13:47:26.108-05:00Scanning through the post I'm not sure - are y...Scanning through the post I'm not sure - are your for it or agin' it - meaning the combo of Palm/Passion Sunday?

I do it for just the reason you say it was not changed - because people won't always come on Thursday and/or Friday. It may seem like pandering, but I refuse to allow people to go from triumphal entry to resurrection - I must proclaim the cross.

I believe the work of the ancient church was a response to and a work of their time. If we are to see disciples grow, we must let our work be the same. I fear 3 years of intense learning and living may not be enough in our time.

Appreciating more and more the work you're doing in this time and in the UMC.

Blessings, MikeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3105645668284699378.post-11700884493135550562011-04-20T13:13:14.742-05:002011-04-20T13:13:14.742-05:00One of the most interesting articles I've read...One of the most interesting articles I've read here.
